transgender people in the military

United States Army soldier, Chelsea Manning, is the first to be provided with hormone therapy for gender transition.

TG Voice Therapy, a female transgender voice therapy specialists, brings you the story.

Chelsea Manning is a current inmate and U.S. Army soldier who sued the federal government in order to receive necessary hormone therapy. She fought for this right under the notion that gender identity disorder should be treated as a medical condition.

Chelsea Manning is currently serving a sentence at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, an all male United States Penitentiary, for leaking classified documents. Her treatment plan at the prison will now include hormone replacement therapy.

This is a progressive step for both the U.S. Army and for transgender soldiers. The amount of veterans with gender identity disorder is increasing every year. It is estimated that 15,000 transgender soldiers already serve in the Army, an astounding number considering there was still a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in place until just a few years ago.

The transgender community has seen a lot of progress within the U.S. Military recently. In recent months, the Pentagon announced that transgender soldiers will be able to serve openly and cannot be discharged for being transgender. This is a huge step in the right direction for LGBT+ civil rights.

are transgenders allowed in the military?

Those already in uniform will have medical costs to transition covered by the Pentagon. Transgender Americans looking to serve in the U.S. Army will have to have spent 18 months in their new gender before enlisting. The United States is not the first country to allow transgender soldiers to serve openly; we follow 18 other nations who already have systems in place to protect transgender soldiers.

The decision to lift the ban is exciting news leading the United States to become more inclusive and diverse in all areas, military personnel included.
