Our Transgender Voice Therapy specialists want you to change your voice as swiftly as possible.

We know that your schedule is busy, and engaging in speech therapy may be taking a lot of time out of your day. With our help, we’d like to inform you about a few secrets that can help you along the way to a new voice. Here are our tips on what to avoid when feminizing your voice.

1. Speaking Deeply

Although this may seem like an incredibly obvious thing to avoid, when we speak, we don’t always realize how we sound. Your main question is probably: “How do I know if my voice is too deep?” Why not try using a frequency tuner that has the ability to measure the intonation of your voice? Try these free apps that are usable on most smartphones.

2. Using Falsetto

Have you ever tried hiding your voice behind one that is really high? This is called falsetto. Although you might think that using falsetto is an easy way to heighten your voice’s pitch, it actually makes you sound a little unnatural. Try avoiding this, and speaking in a regular tone.

3. WhisperingTransgender Voice Therapy

We know that using your voice can make you feel uncomfortable, but whispering is not the answer. If you whisper, you probably won’t be heard. This could lead to a drawn out conversation where you’re constantly being asked to repeat yourself. If you prefer speaking lowly, do so! Just don’t whisper.

4. Adding an Upswing To Your Voice

One way people try to feminize their voice is by adding an upswing to the end of their sentences. An upswing refers to the rise of your voice at the end of sentence. This could make your sentences sound more like questions, even when they aren’t. This may make you sound indecisive or like a ‘valley girl’.

5. Constricting Your Throat

Did you know that men have deeper voices because they have more space in their throat? Trying to eliminate the deep intonation of your voice by clinching your throat may make you sound cartoonish; so make sure you aren’t putting stress on your throat when talking.
